It is forbidden for the local individuals to open accounts due to capital controls in Greece.
There are some exceptions, that the government allows to open account for local citisens and foreign citisens.
One of this exceptions is to open an account with intention to buy a house . Residents abroad are allowed
to open a Greek bank account if the intention of funding the account is to buy a property and the particular
account should be funded with at least 10.000 euro’s within a month.
Generally opening a bank account in Greece is not an easy issue.
The law which is regulating the process is not crystal clear and allows different interpretations in practise .
It is very easy to hear different requests from seperate branches of the same banking institutions.
Necessary documents required, ( indicatively ) :
Photocopy of Passport
Any document from the country of origin showing the address and the occupation of the applicant.
Mobile phone and a certification of ownership of the number which will be used for pins and pass keys .
The main points you should be aware of regarding the withdrawal limits :
420 euro’s per week or 840 per two week period is allowed .
Funds are divided to fresh money ( refers to money came outside greek banking system ) and local money.
Fresh money should be sent directly to another country without any special permission.
Owners of bank accounts that funded from outside have the right to withdraw the %30 of the total amount.
